Kennedys

I'm back in LA after a long flight from Washington! The plane was packed with inaugural revelers, toting souvenirs and donning Obama buttons. (I brought my daughter an Obama jack-in-the box.)  I thought a lot about our previous presidents this week, especially JFK. I wish he and his brother Bobby could have lived to see this day. How far we've come.....

(Bobby is in the middle picture, by the way, jogging with his dog "Freckles.")

Well, at least their younger brother did.

That said, the contrast between the Kennnedys (children of privilege, to be sure) and Obama is striking. Have we had another President who, in his childhood, was on food stamps?

More impressive, as my sister pointed out, is that Obama had a pretty hardscrabble childhood, including an absent father, and seems to have worked through whatever issues that dredged up, unlike, say, Bill Clinton.

I understand what John means, but to me the point about the Kennedy family is that even though they are
children privlege, they've never forgotten that most people are not. Bobby was one of the most remarkable political figures of his era.
