Weekend Cabin Getaway

Cabin Getaway

We're going away this weekend! I'm so excited. We're renting a cabin (no, unfortunately not the one above.. More on that in a minute.) I have so many romantic ideas of cabin life. Vintage blankets, linens and quilts, flannel shirts, mismatched enamelware, an iron bed, an old fashioned stove, homemade pies, pottery vases filled with wildflowers. Oh, and yes, the outdoors.

Did you ever see the movie Always, with Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter? I watched that movie 20 times, it seems, just to study the decor of their little cabin. So magical. (And remember when he bought her "girl clothes"? She looked like an angel.)

So you can imagine how delighted I was when the Los Angeles Time' Home section ran this feature (and online slideshow) recently of Suzan Fellman's wonderful cabin, pictured above and below, in Big Bear.
(Photography by the talented Stephen Page.)

Here's a little tour of Fellman's mountain abode:

more cute photos

An adorable bathroom with a clawfoot tub (and I love the giant ball of yarn!). A cute little dog, an essential trip companion. And look at this kitchen...

...and cozy living room...

The cabin we're renting is more basic. But I'm sure it will be charming. All you need is four walls, the wilderness, and a few (dozen) lovely vintage accessories. My husband assures me that there's WIFI, but I'm not sure...So if you don't hear from me until Monday, you'll know I had a computer glitch -- or an encounter with a California black bear.

UPDATE: Saturday. We're at the cabin. It's very cute! Getting tons of pictures. And we have wifi! Thank you everyone for your lovely comments! So happy! BBQing for dinner...

UPDATE: Sunday.. Hello everyone! Here sipping coffee and reading a stack of magazines. Can't wait to show you my Polaroids. Will upload them as soon as we get home this evening..have lots to tell you!

I'm sure it will be charming but (mwhahaha) beware of les loups! Remember the Polaroid, yes? Safe journey. xo

Big Bear is very charming, and I'm sure the cabin you are renting will have some of the wonderful vintage stuff you are craving. As an aside, I vacation every year with a group of women I know from gradeschool. And two of them bought a cabin in Crestline, furnished it very similarly to your posted photos, and we've enjoyed it to the max!

Oh, how wonderful! I adore that cabin! Have lots of fun, Tina!
P.S. I completely understand that bears are dangerous, but I can't help having a huge crush on them. Men and bears, they are that way.

Ooooooohhhhhh, I love this!!! Have loads of fun. I think cabin weekends are best with no tv, no wifi. But, c'est la vie.

I'd make a lovely boeuf bourguignon and chocolate mousse. Perhaps a loaf of French bread to souse up the sauce with.

During most of my childhood and tweenhood, we spent half of every year on a ranch in Southern Colorado. It had been a settlement in the pioneer days, called Nesterville. Seven cabins remained, all on our property, all left as they had been near the turn of the century, intact. The walls were insulated with dirt. The hallways and stair cases were often wallpapered with newspaper pages from the day (fascinating reading!) or old Sears Roebuck catalog pages. We occupied the largest of them, changing it very little. We had two woodstoves - a large one for cooking and a small for heat. We had no plumbing, carried our water in tin buckets from the well, which needed priming each time, but the water was delicious. We had not electricity, just kerosene lanterns. And yes, we used an outhouse. We bought vintage iron bedsteads which were cool, but we had not fancy quilts or fabrics. It was quite utilitarian...but those were my favorite months of the year. What a wonderful life.

What a beautiful place. I know you'll have a lovely weekend! We like to get away to the cabins at a couple of Tennessee's state parks (they were built in the 30's by the CCC and are so charming). We always say let's go to "the cabin", even though there isn't a specific one where we stay. Love "the cabin". Makes me happy just thinking about it.

The thing that makes a cabin, however it's decorated, is the people in it, though the right wines help. I'm sure any cabin with you in it will be an essay in grace.

How lovely. I'm so fortunate to have a cabin in my family for over fifty years. I posted about it today. These photos are so beautiful. I'd love to start from scratch and decorate one (and wouldn't it be wonderful if someone else took care of it??).

Thank you. Lovely post as you always have...

I find the kitchen charming. I'd love to siddle up to the countertop with a cup of coffee in hand, gaze out the window, and enjoy a morning there with guests. Pretty place.

Regarding the movie, Always, it was the last film that Audrey Hepburn appeared in and she was the actual angel and elegant indeed. I have a friend who uses the film to teach wildland firefighting techniques . The footage of the firefighting planes is intense and it is a romance. I live in an old ranch house in central California, and sometimes the cabin romance is lost in the 54 degree indoors temperatures (no insulation).
