What are you reading?

I'm just finishing "A Three Dog Life" by Abigail Thomas. It's a memoir about Thomas' effort to build a new life after a devastating tragedy. I so admire her bravery (and beautiful prose.) She finds tremendous comfort from the company of her three dogs, hence the title.

I've also been going through stacks of decor books. Still trying to arrange our little house...

What are you reading??

I'm reading a classic, Evelina, and today I started reading "John Adams" by David McCullough. I now see our Founding Fathers in a brand new light. I didn't realize the struggles and bloody battles they endured.

Just finished two very different books. The first 'The Guernsey literary and potato peel society' was such an entertaining read though it touches on the sadness of WWII. It has a feel-good ending which is what I wanted! The second was 'Are women human?' Strange I know. They are two essays on the role of women in society by Dorothy L. Sayers. A short but very good read.
Now I'm back to the book I've been avoiding lately. I'm halfway through 'Wolf Hall'. I'm enjoying it but it's such a brick of a book!

The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal. Fascinating family history that's thankfully not written with rose-tinted nostalgia leaking from every page. Very good so far.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Recently studied Paradise by Abdulrazak Gurnah, which has a strong intertextual relationship, so decided to read this too. I've just finished reading Diary of a Provincial Lady (EC Delafield) and Woolf's Between the Acts.

Just finished Olive Kitteridge and truly was an outstanding book. At times it read like a book of short stories. A view into the life of a very complex women leaves you with some thought provoking feelings about human nature. Now reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Now this is an adventure. With a cast of eccentric characters this book not only includes murder and drama but a peak into the life of a southerner.

I recently finished The Tiger's Wife and very much enjoyed it. I am now almost done with The Lacuna, by Barbara Kingsolver. It's wonderful - her writing is exquisite and it's set in an interesting time with a very unique perspective.

Reading Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann. Loving it, even the sad parts. Gorgeous writer. Don't want it to end. Sped through a friend's copy of Battle Hymn of a Tiger Mother. That chick's definitely certifiable, but yet it is interesting to contemplate East-West differences in child rearing and attitudes toward children's achievement and her comments on educational styles. I have to say I'm down with her when it comes to children's projects that are more work for the parents than the kids. Very telling are the parts where she references her husband and then says, "I'll let Jed tell his own story."

Not so much reading, Tina!
But I got this book; 'Katachi'. The B&W photography of Japanese objects which are so inspiring! Even simple bamboo garden tools can be so beautiful...

yes, I've read A Three Dog Life, very hard book, as is living with Brain Injury. I think it was the Australian aboriginals, would refer to a night in reference to how many dogs you needed to keep you warm. A really bad, cold night would take three.
After my son's brain injury, we got two dogs, guess we had a two dog night! jenny

I just finished "Under the Banner of Heaven". It left me with such a creepy feeling. :( I guess that means the author did his job?

I have to tell you I finished reading "A Three Dog Life" on Saturday. I was so taken by the description of the book on her website and your short intro that I bought it for my i-pad. I would have been done sooner however, my youngest is recovering from foot surgery. It was a touching, some times painful and beautiful book.
So thank you for the inspiration.

I've been on a non-fiction kick lately... I've gone through all but one of Malcolm Gladwell's books (last one is on my 'to read' list), the Freakonomics books, Paco Underhill's books about the psychology of shopping and marketing, and now I'm reading 'The Men Who Stare at Goats' by Jon Ronson. I never saw the movie and don't want to, but the book is incredibly weird and interesting; US military teams training on how to walk through walls, kill creatures by staring at them, and many other paranormal things funded by us taxpayers over the years.
