Chairs with personality

I have a crush on a chair. I spotted it yesterday in the Anthropologie store at The Grove in LA. It's colorful -- orange and white -- and way too expensive, like those silkscreened Prada shoes a few seasons back.

Upholstered chairs seem to me like the ultimate decor investment. They become characters in a room. The more tattered they are, the better -- like an Hermes bag with a life well lived. I have a friend who believes that every kitchen should include an upholstered chair, a place to curl up in with a cup of coffee and the New York Times. Her chair is a well-worn, cream-colored Club on wheels. It's draped with an old paisley throw.

The best chairs, of course, are found in thrift stores. But, as usual, I'm in love with all the ones on the Anthropologie site. A sampling:

I can live without the Prada heels these days, but furniture has become my favorite luxury item!

I'm really loving all the chairs at Anthropologie too! I hate that they would cost {more} than an arm and a leg!

Ahhh, Anthropologie does it again. Their catalogs are amazing every single time. I too love these chairs. :)

I think I was MEANT to read these very words, TODAY. I'm in the market for two small-ish chairs in our master bedroom and am experiencing sticker shock, because all of the ones that I love are tres expensivo. Was even thinking of "going cheap" just to fill the space, but know that won't satisfy my chair mojo. Think I'll troll the junk shops and look for beautiful fabric to recover--although that can be spendy, too....maybe take a cue from you and drape with a pretty suzani?? Anyway, thanks for the inspiration!

the top two for snuggle factor - the bottom two for statement design - and more upright sitting!

Love the navy and brown 'doily' chair (2nd from the top)... what an inspiration piece for a new room - it looks so comfy cozy! I couldn't find it on the Anthropologie website, though...

I just convinced a friend to buy fabulous fabric & send off 2 chairs, an ottoman, a bench, a loveseat, & something else I forget..for recovering. I was there last Thursday when he picked them up. then I talked her into having him make curtains & pillows. All together the covering of all the furniture will be $1,950. (That does not include the fabrics but this is an outstanding deal. I've seen his work; he does stuff for embassies here, etc.)
I found some vintage fabrics for friend, the other pieces are reproductions from G Street Fabrics (famous here, people come down from NYC, yep, they do).

So. I have seen fabric very very similar to that of the top pix, actually all of them, Mme T. Watcha waitin' for? I like Anthropologie for inspiration, too, but the furniture is awful (I mean the bones/quality of.)

me too! Wish my kitchen was big enough for a "cozy up" chair. I prefer to find a special prize at an estate sale or craigslist. Even if I buy really nice fabric and have it recovered, its cheaper than buying a nice one new. The older ones are generally structurally more sound too.

i have a crush on anthropologie as a whole... if my life could look like the pages of their catalogues, or the inside of their stores - oh man! perfection. ;)

Doesn't Antro just have the best chairs? And of course you NEVER find them being re-sold or secondhand. le sigh...

I found an amazing olive green crush velvet armchair for $20 at the goodwill... mint condition. must have sat in a little old lady's front room and never used.

I didn't realize that you lived in Pasadena! You're house is blocks away and is so adorable... sad you had to move!

Oh no. I've been contemplating taking up the oh so daunting task of reupholstering my very first chair and these photos are making it impossible to let go of the absurd idea. Now all I need is some quirky fabric and and a prayer.

I really want a kitchen that is soothing to cook in, rather than the one I have which has 5 doors leading onto it! So I have no place for this chair, but I would definitely have one of these in my bedroom by the window.

I too am obsessed with chairs lately. I've been blogging about them nonstop!

The latest purchase is an Eames that was in a floor sample sale.

Love it.

the last chair you have pictured (creme with the birds) is in my store's dressing room, and i love to sit in it when i get a chance and it's slow in the store (a no-no on the job!). if i had $1000 i would buy it in a heartbeat!

Love these chairs - especially the first and second...
I think your friend has the right idea. I've always loved the concept of an over-stuffed upholstered chair in the kitchen...in front of a stacked-stone fireplace. It's just so cozy! Maybe someday. ;)

Oh dear, that Anthropologie furniture. When I walk in that store, I sometimes just want to ask them to just bag it all -- the clothing, the furniture, the housewares and bedding. Heavenly. These chairs are like those awesome reading chairs that you pass down in your family. Love them.

Hear, hear! I heartily agree with:

a) the irresistable love for all things Anthropologie.
b) the luxuriousness of an upholstered chair.
and c) the coziness of your friend's kitchen! I am in love with that idea!!

I can't wait until I decorate my future home; it's going to be fabulously fun. :)

I love those chairs, i think i have a bit of a chair fetish! as i seem to collect chairs, these look especially good, we are selling some print dresses in the store in London and the prints would look good on those chairs too! we also used the waste to make some cute Liberty print panties which we have at the EJF pop up gallery in Carnaby Street London for the month of April if your travelling to the Uk! can send you a pic if your interested! I love the blue and white doily chair my husband will move out if I buy one more chair. I too love upholstered chairs in the kitchen. They are so comfy and make entertaining in the kitchen so much more relaxing!

I never thought of having a comfy chair in the kitchen. I do think it's a fab idea. I may have to that in my own kitchen.
