A Magazine Favorite: Camping with Style

camp

Normally I would be posting on Domino tonight, but I got distracted by these photos in the newest issue of Country Living. It was the Cath Kidston tent (above) that did it...

camp

Or maybe it's because my secret dream is to live in a little cabin somewhere...

camp

I just flipped over these photos...

I'm really longing to go to our little rental cabin in the High Sierras.

I don't know if I'll make it this year, but I'm so daydreaming...

A Domino Favorite: Buenos Aires

Domino: Buenos Aires

This story about Maria Noel's Buenos Aires apartment ran in the June 2006 issues of Domino Magazine. I remember immediately falling in love with this upholstered bed...

Domino: Buenos Aires

I love how the blue reading lamp is attached to the headboard.
Very undesignerly.
The black and white chairs in this photo below are wonderful....

Domino: Buenos Aires

This little settee with the grouping of old Japanese prints is lovely. (I love settees, maybe because I've spent so many years living in small spaces in expensive Los Angeles.)

And here's Domino's Buenos Aires shopping guide.

The San Telmo neighborhood looks so charming!

I've been enjoying revisiting my old issues of Domino here on Sundays. Today's post was especially a welcome distraction. I'm facing a major decision this week regarding my father, who was recently diagnosed with a terrible bone marrow disease.

I will keep you posted. I promise.

A Domino Favorite: Small Space Color

Domino: Small Space Color

I just want to say that I'm completely in love with this hot pink kitchen...

Although this green dining room is nice too...

Domino: color

I'm continuing my new Sunday tradition of posting old Domino articles. I hope you like this one. It appeared in the April 2006 issue. Domino says: "Brighter rooms, happier you." Do you think that's true? Maybe I have too many white walls in the house!

(Here's the link to my previous Sunday Domino posts. And click the photos above to view them large on my Flickr page.)

A couple other things:

Congratulations Liss at Daydream Lily for being named a Blogger.com "Blog of Note"! Men from all over the world have been proposing to Liss in the wake of the honor. She has wisely started screening her messages.

And thank you Veronique at Here in Malibu for telling me about TweetDeck. Although I'm now living on Twitter, I have a long way to go before I catch up with Ashton Kutcher! (Please follow me before #moonfruit crashes Twitter.)

Have a great Monday everyone!

A Domino Favorite: Black and White

domino favorite: black white and cool all over

I love this photo of black and white treasures displayed against a dark gray wall. (Check out the little black dress and white sweater, upper right!)

A Domino Favorite: Black and White

This series of photos appeared in the December 2005 issue of Domino magazine as part of an article, "Black and White and Cool All Over"...

I especially love the black chandelier....

And the curtain tied back with a black grosgrain ribbon. (Also cute shoes and cat!)

Hope you had a lovely weekend.

A Domino Favorite: Carolina Herrera Jr.

Domino: Carolina Herrera Jr.

I love this article about Carolina Jr.'s Madrid apartment

Domino: Carolina Herrera Jr.

It appeared in the Domino premiere issue, Spring/Summer 2005

Domino: Carolina Herrera Jr.

I adore the blackboard, the Moroccan mirror, the antique Suzani, the red tupils. And the vintage copy of Kenneth Tynan's Bull Fever...

The settee as bed footboard is so clever.

And look at this fantastic bathroom. The clawfoot tub is wonderful amid the antiques.

And here's Carolina's shopping guide to Madrid:

I'd love to spend an afternoon at the Rastro flea market!

Click photos to see them large on my flickr page. I'm hoping to post Domino articles every Sunday. You can visit last week's feature {here}. xo

A Domino Favorite: Secondhand (Love) Story

Domino: secondhand (love) story

I've been organizing my magazines this weekend -- finally finding all my old Dominos. I rediscovered this article that I loved so much when it came out in March 2007

Domino: secondhand (love) story

It's a fantastic piece about a Portland, ME, couple's quest for quirky, mostly vintage, things...

Domino: secondhand (love) story

I adore the colorful patchwork of pillows...and this amazing closet with old paper lanterns...

Domino: secondhand (love) story

I've posted the entire article on my flickr page, in large form if you want to read it. I'm hoping to turn my Domino revisits into a Sunday series here. What do you think?

Is House Beautiful the new Domino?

house beautiful
I stopped by the grocery store this afternoon to pick up medicine for my cold. As I was waiting for my prescription, I flipped through the latest issue of House Beautiful. I've always been a fan of the magazine. Editor Stephen Drucker (once a newspaper guy) is brilliant and my old Los Angeles Times colleague Barbara King works there as the executive editor.

As good as their previous issues have been, the April magazine feels different. It's more like -- dare I say it? -- Domino. (my former glossy fav.) In this new HB, my favorite feature -- an enthralling Q & A with interior designer Cristine Gillespie -- is called "Getting Cozy with Quirky." Like music to my ears. Some of the stills in "The Mix" also caught my eye. Here's a little sampling from both stories....

Recently Updated6

Dominoesque? What do you think? And there's something else delightful in this month's edition: There's a feature on Etsy artists. It seems like an unmistakable nod to the online decor blogs who have championed Etsy and its artisans from the start. (A quote from the magazine's website: "Etsy.com is changing the way we look at handmade and becoming the ultimate online crafts fair.") A few of the featured artists below...

I left the store with my cold medicine and the magazine, feeling much better.

If Drucker can really capture the still mourning Domino crowd, he is brilliant indeed.

Inside My Inspiration File

img032

In an effort to keep magazines and newspapers from taking over my house, yard and garage, I started clipping my favorite articles and pictures for an inspiration file about five years ago. Now, the file has grown to (at least) several boxes. I wanted to give you a little look inside.

Here are some of the things I pulled out randomly today: A story from the New York Times magazine on lipstick queen Poppy King; A photograph of colored shirts (Great Gatsby, anyone?) in Real Simple; My dream desk, flanked by books and Hermes boxes; There's an Elle magazine book page, which is always excellent. The Prince of Frogtown by Rick Bragg is featured. (Bragg once asked me out on a date, many moons ago); There's a picture of Hayden Panettiere in the ultimate Burberry coat and an inspiration board featured in the April 2008 issue of Domino magazine (don't get me started on how much I already miss Domino); From Bazaar, there's a Fashionable Life profile of Isabel Toledo. And my favorite: A watercolor of a pink coat (from a review of "Drawing Fashion: The Art Kenneth Paul Block.") As usual my eye is drawn to anything pink.

Domino

This dreadful recession has taken a toll on everyone, especially print media. My favorite fashion magazines are almost as skinny now as the models they feature. With all the troubles at Condé Nast and worries about more magazine closures, I wanted to highlight one of the jewels of my mailbox: Domino. The February issue (featuring the home of Zooey Deschanel) arrived yesterday. I think I've saved every edition of the decor magazine since it started publication three years ago (and I know some of my girlfriend bloggers have done the same.) It's become a cult favorite with the trendy set. Above are some of my picks from the "Best of Domino" slideshow on the magazine's website.

(PS: The pug painting is by Jessie Mott, via Dominomag.com!)

UPDATE JANUARY 29:  The word is out. Domino is closing. March will be the last issue. Sigh.
